Nextnews 2.0 is available on the Apple App Store as of last Sunday! Since the new version is a complete rewrite which might bring unexpected breaking changes, I opted for a so-called “phased release” which will distribute the update over the course of a week – just in case there are catastrophic errors not caught during testing.

Here are the new features:

• Rewritten from the ground up
• Faster and more reliable article sync engine (hopefully no more crashes)
• Liquid glass design
• Open websites in Nextnews from your browser to subscribe to their feeds

For anyone using Nextnews on the iPad or Mac (yes, this release will work on Apple Silicon Macs again), there’s a 2.0.1 update in the pipeline that addresses the layout bugs along with some general QOL improvements. It’s available in beta now and will be published to the App Store very soon.

Here are some of the new features:

• Brand new beautiful design
• OPML import
• Share websites from your browser to Nextnews to subscribe to their feeds
• Brand new sync engine that works with larger article lists
• Better support for unusual Nextcloud setups and improved errors if the connection fails

What to test:

• Does the app connect to Nextcloud News? I switched to their most current API, so outdated setups might have issues or not work at all
• Are your settings migrated over without issues?

Please enable error reporting in the settings and screenshot + submit anything that doesn't look right. If you're encountering major issues, you can always reinstall version 1 from the App Store.

Nextnews Version 1.1 is finally here bringing iPad and even macOS support on Apple Silicon. Other improvements include:

• Option to automatically mark articles read on scroll
• Different view modes for your article list
• Auto refresh of your feeds after a certain amount of time
• Press and hold articles in the list for quick actions (on macOS you can just right-click which is even nicer)

Here are the most notable changes

iPad support is here with a multi-column layout and support to be run in split screen mode with other apps

Tap the checkmark in the bottom right and mark articles read automatically while scrolling

A new simplified view mode that fits more information

Extended settings page that allows you to subscribe to updates for Nextnews or set your auto-refresh delay

You can press and hold articles in the list for quick actions

The initial release had an embarrassing bug that caused Nextnews to crash continuously if you decided to send a tip. I quickly published a fix for this. Sorry to everyone who generously sent a tip only to end up in a crash loop!

If you want to support the development of Nextnews, I highly encourage you to donate through the settings screen of the app. If that's not your style, there's another way you can help the development of the app: Signing up for the beta (well, I guess you read the title).

If you join the beta on Apple Testflight, you have access to new features sooner – BUT the app may be buggy. If you ever run into more severe issues, you can simply remove it from your device and get the App Store version instead.
